Boys Don’t Cry and The Wedding Banquet are two completely different films. For our purposes this week we will discuss them together under the umbrella of 1990s New Queer Cinema. Pick a scene from each film and, drawing on Michele Aaron’s discussion of NQC, make an argument for how you see the films in relationship—or in contrast, or some combination of both—to mainstream cinema. According to Roger Ebert, Boys Don’t Cry is a romantic catastrophe set directed by Kimberly Peirce in 1999. This film gets based on Teena Brandon, who is a transgender man. Despite his sensationalized coverage of the media, the greatest accomplishment of this film was how it managed to keep Teena human. It also played a vital role in the shedding of light on the challenges of life and death that the nonconforming LGBTQ, non-binary, gender queer and transgender persons go through while living authentically (Motro, 227).Intercultural Film Research Essay

Other than that, the film sheds some light on the hotbeds of inherited violence inclinations, ignorance and hatred that gets inflicted on boys that cry and others who are similar. On the other hand, directed in 1993 by Ang Lee, The Wedding Banquet, is both a touching and funny story that involves dishonesties which allow for acceptance. It involves a young lad, Wai-Tung, who is a gay although whom the parents wish for him to marry a woman and bear them grandchildren. To do a friend a courtesy and appease them, Wai-Tung gets into a marriage of opportuneness with an underprivileged settler artist, Wei-Wei, who rents him an apartment. As a result, Wei-Wei gets her green card and Wai-Tung’s parents stop bothering him and everyone gets satisfied, or so everyone thinks (Schewe 51).

Both The Wedding Banquet and Boys Don’t Cry are a delight which evokes occasional tears and the sporadic laughter as well. These films’ luxuriously condensed plots trace on numerous timely and controversial issues, that is; Providing a perspective anatomy of intolerance and homophobia in the American Hot land and the sexual identity nature, sociology vs. biology in the construction of gender, role playing in modernity (Willis, Andy, and Felicia 104).

What makes these films original and distinguished, I dispute, is not that the directors encompassed “queer cinema” per se; somewhat, but that the films have come up with a credible and cogent way to aid in reconciling the susceptibility of “Queer” using the formalist appealing of narratives that are conventional. In the process, both Lee and Roger may have made to perfection their own subgenre- the “queer” film made “straight”- via their capability in preserving and balancing both the integrity of “straight” style of narration and influence of “queer” content (Jacobs son 59).Intercultural Film Research Essay
